Pupil Premium 2016-2017

Purpose
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. It is part of the ‘Narrowing the Gap’ agenda.

In 2011 – 12 the Government launched its new ‘Pupil Premium’ funding. This money is sent to schools based on the numbers of pupils in the school who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and also for any looked after children. From 2012 – 13, it has
been expanded to include all children who have been eligible for FSM within the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’). Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and children of service personnel.

Accountability & Funding
The Government believes that head teachers and school leaders should decide how to use the Pupil Premium. They are held accountable for the decisions they make through:

  • the performance tables which show the performance of disadvantaged pupils compared with their peers (see our Performance Data/Achievement Report);
  • the new Ofsted inspection framework, under which inspectors focus on the attainment of pupil groups, in particular those who attract the Pupil Premium;
  • the new reports for parents that schools now have to publish online .

In most cases the Pupil Premium -£1,320 per pupil for 2016-17 and £1,900 for LAC (Looked After Children) – is paid direct to schools, allocated to them for every pupil who receives free school meals or has done so in the last 6 years. Schools decide how to use the funding, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision their pupils need.

The targeted and strategic use of pupil premium will support us in achieving our vision.

Principles:

  • We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils
  • We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately addressed
  • We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals

 

Accountability & Funding – How Pupil Premium is spent at St. Joseph’s Catholic Juniors.
Pupil Premium Grant for 2016-17 (approximately £34,160 based on 21 Ever 6 FSM and 2 Post LAC) has been spent or allocated to help subsidise the cost of increasing Teaching Assistant support. This will ensure that each class has a TA every morning and, for at least three classes, every afternoon. In Year 5 there will be 2 TAs for both the morning and afternoon session based on the
needs of two children who have either a Statement of Special Educational Need or a Single Plan.

 

Provision

  • Providing small group work with an experienced teacher or teaching assistant focussed on overcoming gaps in learning
  • 1-1 support
  • Additional teaching and learning opportunities provided through teaching assistants, pastoral care or external agencies.
  • All our work through the pupil premium will be aimed at accelerating progress, moving pupils to at least age related expectations. This will be predominantly in English and Mathematics
  • Those children who require support to access educational visits will be offered 50% of the cost of a visit.

 

Monitoring Impact
Governors will continue to monitor the allocation of funds and ask searching questions around the measurable impact of Pupil Premium initiatives. The Governors will receive a report on progress towards our targets as part of the Head Teacher’s termly report.

Important Note:
If your child does not have Free School Meals, but may be eligible because of your family’s income level, please contact the office (in confidence) to register them. Even if you do not wish them to have the meals, this would mean the school could still claim Pupil Premium funding that may be used to help your child.

The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’). Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and children of service personnel.

Schools decide how to use the funding, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision their pupils need.

Accountability & Funding – How Pupil Premium is spent at St. Joseph’s Catholic Juniors.

Pupil Premium Grant for 2015-16 (approximately £35,820) has been spent or allocated, in the main, to help subsidise the cost of increasing Teaching Assistant support and also with a small amount (approximately £800) used to subside Extended School Activities, in order to ensure these are available to all pupils. This will ensure that each class has a TA every morning and, for at least three classes, every afternoon. In Year 4 there will be 2 TAs for both the morning and afternoon session based on the needs of two children who have either a Statement of Special Educational Need or a Single Plan. The TAs will mainly be used to support teaching and learning in literacy and maths through in class support and through a timetable of intervention, where small groups are withdrawn to follow specific ‘catch-up’ programmes or to extend/challenge more able pupils.
