On Thursday 27th June, Jessica and Archie from Year 5 visited St Philip Neri Junior School in Dunston to represent their class in a Gateshead schools poetry competition, having been selected the winners in their class competition.
The children had to learn two poems to perform; one from a set list of classic poems and one of their own choice. Jessica chose a poem by an anonymous author called An Autumn Greeting and The Listeners by Walter de la Mare was her choice from the set list. Archie chose The Adventures of Isabel by Ogden Nash and his choice from the set list was The Tyger by William Blake.
Both children performed brilliantly in front of an audience consisting of the other finalists, teachers and head teachers from the participating schools, St Philip Neri’s Year 5 class and judge, Mr Jones from Gateshead Metropolitan Council.
Mrs Thomson, Year 5 class teacher, said of the pair: “I was so proud of both of them. They were confident, clear and used great pace and expression in their recitals”.
Though they were not one of the three winners, they were outstanding representatives for St Joseph’s Junior School and, as finalists, were awarded a trophy by judge, Mr Jones.
Well done, Jessica and Archie!
