During this Spring half-term, the children from Year 5 have been taking part in a Creative Weaving project with resident artist Kate Eccles at Birtley library.
‘The children have really enjoyed this project and produced some very colourful and creative work using old bits of materials,’ said Mr Shields.
The project, which began by looking at the founding of Elizabethville, a town within Birtley built to provide a home for Belgian refugees during the 2nd World War, focused on how materials needed to be reused and recycled during the war. This idea was then turned into creating something new from something old, which in this case was woven chair covers.
The photographs below show how well the children completed their task. The finished artworks will remain on show at Birtley library to give both family and friends a chance to see them.
